I have a Job where i use the PC professional every day. In addition I use it quite a lot from time to time also at home. My recomendations for different Software is as follows:

Commersial programs:

Video editing. Adobe Premier elements. A super program for editing  your home videos. Used it for years.
Picture editing. Adobe Photoshop elements. Also a great program for cataloging your pictures in albums/search words/tagging.

Freeware:

CD ripping. Exact Audio Copy. The best there is for ripping.

MP3/CD avspiller. Quessential player. A Tiny player.

MP3 tagging. Media tagger. For tagging your MP3 files. 

MP3 jukebox. Mediamonkey. The best "all-in-one" program. For playing, organising and tagging of MP3 files. Also supports iPod.   I never uses iTunes!

ZIP. Zip Genius. Covers a lot of packed formats (zip, arc, rar, ...)

FTP. Zip genius. The same vendor also has a perfectly alright FTP client.

Internett Radio. Screamer radio. A tiny radio program with hundreds of predefined stations.

Backup pogram. Syncback.  A simple backup program. Perfect for my needs.

Picture Editing . Cam2PC og Faststone  #  For browsing pictures and simple editing. Faststone even supports RAW format converting.

CD/DVD Burning. CD Burner XP Pro.  I have used NERO for many years. But now NERO have just got to big. This program does what it's supposed to do - burn a CD/DVD.
